There are two Codes of Practice on Bullying to guide employers on how to deal with bullying in the workplace. The most recent Code was published by the Health and Safety Authority in 2007. The Labour Relations Commission also published a Code in 2002. The Health and Safety Authority’s Code is the most detailed.
In practice, while there are three Codes covering the areas of bullying, harassment and sexual harassment, many employers will have just one ‘Dignity and Respect at Work Policy’ which will address bullying, harassment/sexual harassment in the workplace although separate policies can be just as effective. Employers should take account of all three Codes when developing their policy, although the informal and formal processes for all three Codes are very similar.
