Statutory Sick Pay Scheme
The new statutory sick scheme was first published in November 2021. This scheme came into effect on 01 January 2023. This scheme brought Ireland in line with other European countries that already have paid leave during sickness for workers.
The Statutory Sick Pay Scheme was introduced in recognition of the need to provide greater security for lower-income earners, which was highlighted during the pandemic response.
This Sick Leave Act 2022, requires employers to provide a minimum number of paid sick leave days from 2022 (initially three days), rising gradually from enactment to 2026, when 10 sick leave days will be required.
